Thank-You Note from MLK for Sale
IN JANUARY OF 1961, Sammy Davis Jr. helped put together a fundraiser for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference at NYC’s Carnegie
Hall, featuring such pals as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and comedian Jan Murray. SCLC leader Martin Luther King Jr. later wrote Sammy a thank-you letter, and it’s now being offered for sale at a price of $85,000 by the LA auction house Moments in Time. MLK called the event “a historic affair” that Sammy had “personally initiated and organized, then crowned with your astonishing artistry.” The civil rights pioneer also asked for Frank’s address so he could send the Chairman of the Board a thank-you note as well. "I hope our schedules will dovetail sometime soon so we can spend a little time together under more relaxed conditions,” MLK wrote to Sammy. He signed the letter, “With warm personal regards to you and your charming wife, I am sincerely yours, Martin.”
