Closer Weekly - - In Memoriam -

“The key to their marriage was a good sense of humor, and also theirs was a true love,” family friend Brad Meltzer tells Closer of the 41st president and his first lady. “They laughed together, cried together — they did everything together. In almost every picture they are holding hands!” George enlisted in the Navy on his 18th birthday, six months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. As a pilot, he flew 58 combat missions and was shot down. While still in the Navy, he married Barbara, and they later had six children (one daughter, Robin, tragically died of leukemia at the age of 3 in 1953). After two terms as Ronald Reagan’s VP, George won the presidency in 1988, and son George W. followed in his footsteps 12 years later. His beloved Barbara died in April, and George H.W. followed her seven months later. Said George W., “After Mom died, all he really wanted to do was hold her hand again.”
