Sweet surprises filled the day as Britain’s Prince George turned 7. The eldest son of Prince William and Kate Middleton enjoyed a nature-themed celebration on his July 22 birthday. “William put up tents in the garden and he and Kate surprised the birthday boy with a yurt,” confides a friend about this rounded tent. “He also received a new bicycle from [siblings] Charlotte and Louis.”

The royal family has been living at Anmer Hall, their country estate in Norfolk, since the spring. For George’s birthday, Kate’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton,

NEW TRADITIONS

Kate has gotten in the habit of baking birthday cakes herself. “I love making the cake,” she admits. “I sort of stay up until midnight with ridiculous amounts of cake mix and icing. I make far too much, but I love it.”

Her husband, William, was just slightly older than George when he went away to boarding school; however, these modern parents intend to break tradition and keep George home for a few more years. “They feel he’s too young and worry he’ll miss Charlotte and Louis,” says the friend. “Kate’s so close to her kids and hates the thought of any of them leaving home.”

George, who is third in line for the throne, has really matured this year. “He’s come out of his shell and is a confident little boy,” says the friend. “He’s developed a competitive streak and is already showing signs that he’s a high achiever. It’s certainly a personality trait that will come in handy when he’s king!” traveled to join in the fun. “George loves being outdoors surrounded by nature, so it was the perfect treat!” says the friend. “The whole family played giant Jenga, cornhole, football and hide-andseek —even Michael and Carole!”
