HPV Vaccine: The only vaccine to prevent cancer
MARSHALL COUNTY — Males and females from 9 years old up to the age of 45 are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be vaccinated against several strains of high risk human papilloma virus (HPV). High risk HPV are viruses that can lead to cancer of the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, anus, back of throat including the base of the tongue and tonsils (oropharyngeal).
HPV vaccination is recommended up to the age of 26; with the initial dose beginning at 11 to 12 years old. The second dose should be administered 6 to 12 months after the first dose. The vaccine can be given as early as 9 years old, but has been approved for adults up to the age of 45.
