John “Jack” Monroe, age 74, of Milford, passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2018. Jack was born June 21, 1942 in Bridgeport, son of the late Edward Kegler and Elizabeth ( Hogan) Monroe and had been a lifelong Stratford resident before his recent move to Milford. Jack graduated from Stratford High School and attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. He was a United States Marine Corps Veteran and prior to his retirement, he was the owner/ operator of Monroe Shade and Blind Company for many years. He was an accomplish­ed writer, and along with writing, the sport of boxing was his passion. He was published numerous times in many boxing journals and was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 2010. As a boxing historian, Jack was an outspoken advocate for many athletes whose abilities and accomplish­ments were overlooked, most notably heavy weight champion Paul Pender. He was also a prolific author of poetry and traveled extensivel­y in his younger years. Survivors include his three sisters and their husbands, Joan and Joseph Tiberio of Milford, Lenore Monroe and Alan Frolich, MD of Tucson, Arizona and Carol Monroe and Evangelos Xistris, MD of Fairfield. He also leaves behind five nieces and nephews, Joseph Toberio Jr. and his wife Denise of Milford, Mary Colella and her husband David of Guilford, Jennifer Tiberio of Milford, Marisa Allan of New York, NY and Ashley Grover of New York, NY and seven great nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to visit with his family Tuesday, June 5, 2018 from 4: 00 p. m. to 7: 00 p. m. in the William R. McDonald Funeral Home, 2591 Main St., Stratford. Interment will be private.
