Margaret E. Wright

-

Margaret Ehlert Wright died July 20, 2018 in her home on Walnut Beach in Milford, CT, at the age of 92. She was locally famous for her daily six mile walks on Silver Sands beach boardwalk, which she continued into her 90’ s. Margaret was the last survivor and the youngest of nine children born to Mary LaHue and William Ehlert in the Sunset District of San Francisco, CA. One favorite childhood story was told of tackling the endless ironing; she and her sisters Dotty and Virginia would set up two ironing boards, while the third sister would read aloud to all. She is survived by her husband, William Wright Jr, who met her in San Francisco during World War II. They married and moved to Bridgeport CT where they raised four children. Margaret retired from the Bridgeport Town Clerk’s offi ce in 1984, with distinction and a commendation for meritorious service from the Mayor of Bridgeport.

Margaret had a contagious laugh, was a voracious reader and a strong swimmer. She was famous for writing letters with enclosures of newspaper clippings, sent to family and friends from coast to coast. She was also a woman of all seasons. Walks in foggy, misty, or rainy weather reminded her of San Francisco, but she came to enjoy CT too. Her fi rst snowfall in CT found her dancing in the yard, holding the corners of her apron to catch snowfl akes.

Her family extends appreciation for the care in the last year of her life to her dear friends Esther and Luciana, as well as Tracy, Louis and Emma and the staff from Seacrest Retirement Center. Margaret often boasted that she had been “accepted to Yale”; per her request, upon her death, her body went to Yale for medical research purposes. Instead of a memorial service or fl owers, her daughter, Marilyn, and granddaughter, Melody, hope you will take a walk or a swim, eat a lobster roll, or write a letter to a loved one, with a smile and memory of her in your heart.
