New season, new handbag

New season, new handbag. That’s my motto. If you haven’t upped your purse game this season, now is the time.

Accessories are the easiest way to inject seasonal flair to all your outfits and a good bag goes a long way.

For some, a bag is just a bag. You use it to carry your necessities and that’s about it. You might have a very basic, maybe even plain black, purse that you’ve carried for five- plus years. It hasn’t ripped and still does its job, so you don’t see the need to purchase a new one.

But for the fashionistas of the world, a purse is another opportunity to show the world your personal style and the silhouette that best represents you. Which means: a simple, and possibly worn out, bag just won’t do.

Particularly with purses, this accessory can quickly tell the onlooker what you’re all about. Do you enjoy bargain finds from Target? Are you more into luxury items and investing in quality pieces? Or do you keep it casual with a coin purse that you stuff your phone into?

High- maintenance or go- with- the- flow kinda girl? Like it or not, your purse says a lot.

The fun in fashion is getting to try different trends that jazz up ordinary # OOTDS. A trend is simply a trend until you make it your own.

Like with the following four handbag trends, some are old favorites modernized for today while others are brand new to the fashion world and have been gaining momentum for quite a few seasons.

All are beautiful in their own right and cater to a spread of individual personal styles.

The see- through bag

Clothing made out of PVC has been a huge trend for some time now, but I don’t blame you if you didn’t jump head first into this transparent trend — I definitely didn’t. There’s just something about wearing plastic pants or heels during summer that doesn’t sound appealing to me.

But on a handbag? I’m willing to give it a try.

The statement might not be so much with the bag itself, but with whatever you decide to carry inside. Since all your possessions will be in full display, you’ll want to curate the items just so.

Choose your swankiest lipstick or perhaps a makeup bag with a fun quote. The possibilities are not only endless, they’re stylish.

The basket bag

This bag goes by many names: straw, woven, bucket, but they all pretty much describe the same purse. I love the basket bag for summer ( and beyond) because the feeling it evokes is unlike any other — it’s like it brings out the hot- weather vibes even on the chilliest day.

If you’re afraid to splurge or even just purchase a straw bag for fear it might go out of style, reconsider. These bags spice up any simple summer outfit but they also become essentials when preparing for a fun getaway. Just think about all the times you’ve wished you had a tropical- esque purse to hold your necessities around the beach? This is the bag.

The circle bag

Circle bags are equal parts vintage and modern. They might not be the most practical but it doesn’t matter; you’ll look good dawning one over your suntanned shoulder or swaying it ever so slightly.

Available in many sizes and styles, this trend can be seen as an ode to more timeless fashion eras. Hat- bag inspired circle bags were often seen carried by the silver screen sirens of the 1950s. Now, this classic style is back and it’s a much more demure and classic way of being on trend then other bags on this list.

If you prefer a more modern take on this style, opt for a silhouette featuring crossbody straps for easy weekend wear. The straps bring a laid- back vibe to this polished bag and also add convenience.

Still want more spunk? Some circle bags come with tassel accessories or striped patterns to add a more current, and relaxed feeling to your wardrobe. The silhouette is still classic but the updates complement current times.

The itty- bitty bag

Not for the practical, this bag is by all definitions just an accessory because you won’t be able to carry much but you’ll sure look trendy.

Bags that look fit for your 4year- old niece are everywhere right now and people are calling them chic. The ever- so- popular belt bag ( let’s just call it what it is: a fanny pack) has even downsized to mimic this trend as well.

This new minimalism look has even taken over other accessories like sunglasses and heels. Women are trading their iconic oversized sunglasses for a sleeker cat- eye shape and forgoing their stiletto heels for one- to- two inch pumps.

Embracing this less- is- more ideal creates the illusion that you don’t need much to look or feel good. The micro bag is really all you need.

So check your baggage, quite literally, at the door because oversized is out and small is in.
