Cops take no chances with WWII- era grenade

- By Tara O’Neill

BRIDGEPORT — Homeowners who hired a contractor to do work in their backyard were met with a potentially explosive surprise Saturday.

The contractor, who was working at a home in the 40 block of Cornell Street, found a World War II- era hand grenade buried under the ground, police spokesman Av Harris said.

The fire department was first on scene around 7 p. m. and relayed to the dispatcher that there was “no mistake” about what the homeowners had reported. Police got to the home soon after and the State Police bomb squad unit was called.

The bomb squad, working alongside Bridgeport police and fire personnel, safely removed the grenade from the home shortly after 8 p. m.

“They will be detonating the grenade at 90 Acres Park ( in Bridgeport) as a precaution,” Harris said. “No one was injured, but obviously we wanted all precautions to be taken.”
