Sacred Heart football runs past Bryant, winning 47- 27

Pioneer running back rushes for 318 yards in win against Bryant

Sacred Heart University running back Jordan Meachum had no idea he was chasing history Saturday afternoon against Bryant.

The senior just saw giant holes and ran through them.

After breaking out for a 99- yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, Meachum broke the school record for rushing yards in a game, going for 318 yards on 23 carries. The previous record was 302 yards set by Marvin Royal in 2000.

The Pioneers also set a team record for rushing yards with 538 yards on the ground as Julius Chestnut added 164 yards of his own as they defeated Bryant 47- 27 on a rainy, windswept day at Campus Field.

Meachum was already having a stellar day before the 99- yard run, largely due to massive holes opened up by the line.

“It was wide open thanks to the offensive line. They really did their thing up front and I wouldn’t have been able to get it without them,” Meachum said. “That 99- yard run was just a clear hole and they did everything they could and it was great. I had no idea ( about the record) I was just out there running and had great blocking up front.”

Partly due to the weather but also because Bryant couldn’t stop the run, SHU only threw the ball three times on the day.

“It was all about execution. Our offensive line did a great job, you can’t ask for anything better and our backs were heading down hill. Anytime you can rush the ball like that, you are in control,” SHU coach Mark Nofri said. “I wasn’t putting the ball in the air if we could get that many yards on the ground, I’ll tell you that.”

The win moves SHU to 3- 0 in the NEC.

“3- 0 with three to play, I’ll take it,” Nofri said. “I was telling the team we need to take this one play at a time, one series at a time. They know what’s at stake and you can’t look ahead. We have Robert Morris
