John Ron­ald Gillis, 83, of East Mont­pe­lier, VT, for­mally of Trum­bull, CT, passed away peace­fully on Novem­ber 19, 2018.

John was born on Cape Bre­ton Is­land, Nova Sco­tia, Canada, Au­gust 29, 1935. He was the first of 9 chil­dren born to Dun­can and El­iz­a­beth “Ag­gie” Gillis.

Af­ter grad­u­at­ing high school, John came to the United States to live with his aunt and un­cle in Strat­ford, CT.

While liv­ing there he at­tended Bullard Havens Tech­ni­cal School where he stud­ied civil engi­neer­ing.

Shortly af­ter­wards, John was em­ployed by De­fonce Con­struc­tion Co., where he worked his way up to job su­per­in­ten­dent. On nights and week­ends, John un­der­took work as a home re­mod­el­ing con­trac­tor. Af­ter de­vot­ing more time to his in­de­pen­dent con­tract­ing work, he es­tab­lished his home build­ing and ex­ca­va­tion com­pany, John R. Gillis Builders.

John leaves be­hind his wife of 61 years and love of his life, Thelma Clark Gillis. He also leaves four lov­ing chil­dren: MaryJo and Irene, both of Ver­mont, and David ( Kathy), and John ( Jen­nifer) both of Con­necti­cut. He is also sur­vived by 10 grand­chil­dren, 4 great grand­chil­dren, and nu­mer­ous nieces and neph­ews, all of whom he cher­ished.

He is sur­vived by his sib­lings, Jessie, Anne Marie ( James), Peggy ( George), Michael ( Mary), Veron­ica, and Rita. He was pre­de­ceased by his par­ents Dun­can and El­iz­a­beth “Ag­gie” Gillis, and 2 broth­ers, An­thony and Richard. He was also pre­de­ceased by a grand­son, and a great grand­son.

There will be a cel­e­bra­tion of John’s life on Sun­day ( TO­DAY), Novem­ber 25 at 1 p. m. at Trum­bull Vol­un­teer Fire Com­pany, 860 White Plains Rd. Trum­bull, CT.

Full fu­neral ser­vices will be held in Ver­mont at a later date.
