John Ronald Gillis
John Ronald Gillis, 83, of East Montpelier, VT, formally of Trumbull, CT, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2018.
John was born on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada, August 29, 1935. He was the first of 9 children born to Duncan and Elizabeth “Aggie” Gillis.
After graduating high school, John came to the United States to live with his aunt and uncle in Stratford, CT.
While living there he attended Bullard Havens Technical School where he studied civil engineering.
Shortly afterwards, John was employed by Defonce Construction Co., where he worked his way up to job superintendent. On nights and weekends, John undertook work as a home remodeling contractor. After devoting more time to his independent contracting work, he established his home building and excavation company, John R. Gillis Builders.
John leaves behind his wife of 61 years and love of his life, Thelma Clark Gillis. He also leaves four loving children: MaryJo and Irene, both of Vermont, and David ( Kathy), and John ( Jennifer) both of Connecticut. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom he cherished.
He is survived by his siblings, Jessie, Anne Marie ( James), Peggy ( George), Michael ( Mary), Veronica, and Rita. He was predeceased by his parents Duncan and Elizabeth “Aggie” Gillis, and 2 brothers, Anthony and Richard. He was also predeceased by a grandson, and a great grandson.
There will be a celebration of John’s life on Sunday ( TODAY), November 25 at 1 p. m. at Trumbull Volunteer Fire Company, 860 White Plains Rd. Trumbull, CT.
Full funeral services will be held in Vermont at a later date.
