When Miro Builders constructed this custom waterfront home on .49 acres in Westport’s coveted Compo Beach community, they built it in unyielding fashion on 41 pylons driven 21 feet into the bedrock to withstand hurricanes and high tides. Paired with architect Roger Bartels’ unconventional design which incorporated uniquely curved roof lines, walls and a conical shaped turret, the result was a HOBI award- winning home and praise from Architectural Digest for being one of the top design projects worldwide for 2008.

Accolades notwithstanding, it was the quality of the work that caught the eye of the current owner.

“The awards are nice to mention but the custom details are what stood out,” said the owner. No detail was spared, from the hinges on the front door to the curved hallways, it was clear just how solidly this house was constructed.”

The idyllic half- acre waterside retreat has approvals for a dock and boasts epic views of the 83acre tidal waters of the Sherwood Mill Pond and oyster house. It is located on a private cul de sac within five minutes to town and the train station.

“We love the proximity to the beaches and our own direct water access,” the owners added. “We enjoy taking our paddleboards to Compo Mill Cove to grab breakfast in the summer at Elvira’s and then paddling home. We have all that comes with living in the Compo Beach area, but off the beaten path.”

The home is encompassed by a variety of flowing sea grasses, birch trees, hydrangeas, roses, peonies as well as other coastal flora. Bartels says the home could be thought of as living life within a two- story magic wall, with an undulating stucco surface facing the street and a facetted glass plane facing the water.

Entering through the arching front door, the eye is immediately drawn to the continuous wall of floor to ceiling windows showcasing the sweeping water views which span throughout the first floor. Light spills in from all directions creating an incredible indoor/ outdoor bond.

The great room centers on a poured concrete fireplace flanked by bookshelves and built- in window seating. A coffered ceiling and Brazilian mahogany floors further enhance the setting.

Calcutta marble is found throughout the kitchen, along with an oversized farmhouse sink as well as high end Wolf, SubZero and Miele appliances. The kitchen is open to the family room which continues the wall of windows in addition to a striking riverstone fireplace and built- in cabinetry. The turret houses an octagonal home office outfitted in dark wood, and library shelves.

Ascending upstairs, an open landing with window bench is perfect for reading or taking in the view. French doors open to the master bedroom with a marble gas fireplace, timber truss exposed wood beams and Juliet balcony. The beautiful master bath is highlighted by dual custom vanities, a soaking tub imported from France, spa shower and frosted glass restroom. There are two more en- suite bedrooms on this level and home gym with rubberized flooring, all with views of the pond and Long Island Sound beyond.
