Superintendent: Masks will be required in Trumbull schools

- By Liz Hardaway

TRUMBULL — As the first day of school approaches, the superintendent reminded the school community on Friday that masks will be required when classes resume regardless of vaccination status.

In a memo to parents and staff, Superintendent Martin Semmel pointed to Gov. Ned Lamont’s executive order, which requires masks to be worn in schools until at least Sept. 30. The governor has said he will reevaluate the school mask mandate closer to when classes resume.

The state is also requiring masks to be worn inside health care facilities, buildings housing people susceptible to the virus, mass transit, taxis, jails and facilities providing child care.

Trumbull schools will align with any future state or federal mandates, according to the district’s plan to return to in-person learning.

The school district said it could also develop “more stringent requirements if necessary” based on the community infection rate and the amount of cases in the schools, the plan stated.

Students are scheduled to return to Trumbull Public Schools on Aug. 31, according to the district’s website.

The town of Trumbull is a different story, though. First Selectman Vicki Tesoro said she will not be institute a universal indoor mask mandate.

Tesoro cited Trumbull’s high vaccination rate of more than 72 percent and the town not having a high infection rate right now.
