KEEP AN EYE ON

Starting 5: UConn coach Geno Auriemma said Friday that he plans on starting the same five he opened last weekend’s exhibition with — Paige Bueckers, Christyn Williams, Evina Westbrook, Olivia Nelson-Ododa and Aaliyah Edwards.

While we saw various lineups take the court last week when Auriemma played all 12 available players, it’ll be interesting to see at what point the 11-time national championship coach will make his first substitution and who will come out.

“There’s a plus and a minus to having obviously a lot of people and that is early on in the season it doesn’t look so good when you put in a lot of players and you throw them out there and the combinations look goofy,” Auriemma said. “Some players don’t fit exactly right with other players. So that takes a while to get to and that’s not going to get solved on Sunday, that’s for sure.”

Newcomers: It’s doubtful all 12 available players will make an appearance this week, but with newcomers Azzi Fudd and Dorka Juhász making immediate impacts it’s possible Auriemma will reach for either early to give a starter rest and bring in fresh legs.

“Some people actually perform a different way in practice than they do in a game,” Auriemma said. “Right now, we plan on starting the same lineup we started Sunday and then we’ll go from there after that and you can probably guess that the same people who played some prominent minutes the other day are gonna get some prominent minutes Sunday.”

Juggling rotation: Arkansas will give Auriemma the chance to see which players do well under pressure especially with four newcomers and over half the team playing their first game at XL Center — which seats over 6,000 more than Gampel Pavilion.

“It’s a lot of fun for us to be able to sub in and out and not miss a beat,” Williams said. “I feel like that’s something that we’ve been lacking the past couple years.”
