Bridgeport kidney doctors move practice to Trumbull

- By Amanda Cuda

TRUMBULL — Dr. Aaron Dommu grew up in Trumbull, so when he heard his practice was moving from Bridgeport roughly a month ago, he was excited.

“It's pretty cool to be able to circle back and practice here,” said Dommu, a doctor at Nephrology Associates.

For roughly 50 years, Nephrology Associates was at 900 Madison Ave. in Bridgeport. But, as the practice began to grow — with six nephrologists and four nephrology nurse practitioners — it outgrew what Dommu said was roughly 3,300 square feet of space.

“We were looking for a location that was a little more aesthetically and functionally appealing for what we need and more convenient for the population we serve,” said Dr. David Bennett, a nephrologist at the practice.

The group eventually decided to move into roughly 5,000 square feet of space in the Trumbull Office Park at 7 Cambridge Drive. The park is in a neighborhood that's part of a “transformation story,” said Rina Bakalar, Trumbull's economic and community development director.

“We have over $125 million of new investment,” she said. “It is not all apartments. We are seeing new businesses like Nephrology Associates come to the area. They complement DaVita Dialysis, which came to that same building last year.”

Nephrology is a medical specialty that treats kidney disease. Dommu said people aren't always at their best when they come to see a nephrologist.

“For people who have to see a nephrologist and have kidney problems, it can be overwhelming,” he said.

That's why he and the others in the practice wanted a space that was comfortable and accessible.

“This is much nicer,” said Dr. Robert Kim. “There's more parking. There's more office space. This is a beautiful location.”

The proximity of the DaVita Dialysis is helpful, the doctors said.

Patients with kidney failure often need dialysis, a treatment that removes waste, salt, and excess water from the body. The Bridgeport office of Nephrology Associates was near a dialysis center, and the doctors at Nephrology Associates are glad to see one near the new location.

But the proximity to a DaVita is just one of the benefits of the new location, Dommu said. Nephrology Associates patients come from Fairfield and New Haven counties, including Westport and Milford. The new office is more centrally located, which is easier on the patients.

“The patients have been very very happy with the new location,” Bennett said. “It's pretty universal that patients tell us they love the new space.”
