Andrew Sentementes
Andrew “Andy” Sentementes, 93, passed away on Friday, February 3, 2023, from complications of Parkinson’s disease. He was born and raised in Kalamata, Greece to Nicholas and Maria (Giannoglou) Sentementes; his parents were born in Artemisia, Greece and Constantinople, Asia Minor, respectively. He was the 3rd of four siblings, with two brothers and one sister. After his father passed away, Andy, already a US Citizen due to his father’s US citizenship from the 1920s, came to the United States in 1946 at the age of 17 years old. Andy’s father had immigrated to the US and owned a grocery store on Pacific St. in Stamford from 1910-1922. Upon Andy’s arrival to the US, he lived with his father’s first cousin, James Sentementes, and his wife Helen in Stamford, CT. Upon arrival to the US, first, he was an auto mechanic. Then he enlisted in the Army and earned his technical education on the GI bill upon his return. He enlisted in the Army during the Korean War in 1952, served two years in Germany, honorably discharged in 1954. He received two medals: National Defense Service Medal and Occupation Medal Germany. In 1960, he returned to Greece for the first time, met and married his bride, Pamela Petrakis after being introduced by a family friend. They returned to Stamford where they worked, raised a family, and were married to each other for 63 years. Andy was proud of his Greek heritage, but also took advantage of every opportunity afforded him to realize the American dream. He instilled in his children that through hard work, education, and discipline you could achieve your goals. Andy worked for 35 years as an electronic technician at Stelma and Pitney Bowes. He loved to hike, read, exercise, play ping pong, watch soccer, and laugh (very loud). He was a proud Veteran, a member of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) and The American Legion. Andy participated annually in all the parades first in Stamford and later in Monroe. In 2011, He was honored at the Stamford Citizen of the Year Presentation Ceremony by the city for his Military Service and Service to the Community. In Stamford, he was a member of the Greek Club where he frequently socialized with friends, watched international soccer, and played ping pong. He also was an Executive Board Member of the Stamford Taxpayers Association, and he served on the Board of the Stamford Senior Center. In Monroe, he and his wife participated in many activities at the Monroe Senior Center. Andy was a dedicated husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather (papou). He is survived by his loving wife, Pamela; his beloved children Mary Michailidis (Dr. Nicholas Sauter) and Nicholas (Denise) Sentementes; his cherished grandchildren: Panayiotis “Peter” Michailidis (Kate Anderson), Andreas “Andy” Michailidis (Meghan Hillery), Alexa Sentementes, Nicholas Sentementes, and Stephen Sentementes. He is also survived by his brother Pericles (Erika) Sentementes and many loving nieces, nephews, family, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Aristotle (Penelope) Sentementes, and his sister Artemis (Chris) Papagelis. The Rite of Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, February 9, 2023 at 11am in Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Bridgeport with Fr. Georgios Livaditis Presbyter officiating followed by interment at Fairfield Memorial Park, Stamford. Calling hours will take place on Thursday morning from 10am until time of service in the church. The Commerce Hill Funeral Home, 4798 Main St. Bridgeport has been entrusted with the services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Homes for the Brave (Bridgeport), Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church (Bridgeport) or Church of the Archangels (Stamford).
