Gloria Treash

April 14, 1939 - January 28, 2023

-

Gloria Hope Whitman Treash, age 83, of Shelton, passed away January 28, 2023. She was born in Lansing, Michigan to the late Faye and Virgilene Whitman.

Gloria grew up alongside her older sister, Diane, both loving music and playing the piano throughout their youth, and reveling in summers spent at the family cottage on Crystal Lake in Michigan. Gloria often laughed about her impish childhood spent making prank phone calls ordering flowers for strangers and petty theft from candy stores, before becoming a serious student and devoted disciple of Jesus through her Lansing church youth group.

After high school, Gloria got her nursing degree at West Suburban College of Nursing in Oak Park, Illinois, and began attending Central Avenue Baptist Church in Chicago, where she met the love of her life, Don Treash. The two married in 1960 and celebrated 61 years of marriage before Don’s passing in October 2021.

After working as a nurse and beginning to raise three children in Oak Park, Gloria moved with her family in 1977 to Trumbull, Connecticut, and became a faithful member of Black Rock Church in Fairfield, where she taught Bible classes with Don, sang in the choir, and mentored many younger individuals and couples in their personal lives and marriages. She was also a small group leader with Community Bible Study for many years, also with Don. Her practical wisdom, humor, and hospitality were admired by many, and her absence will be felt deeply, especially by her children and grandchildren - who will miss her playful spirit, pithy life philosophies, faithful letter-writing, and homemade chocolate “yummy sauce” (the recipe is still a closely-guarded family secret).

Gloria loved watching and playing tennis, and until very recently could still win matches against her kids with well-placed shots at the net. She loved playing card and board games with her grandkids, and will always be the best crossword puzzle solver in the family. Gloria and her husband Don were a traveling twosome - faithfully visiting their children wherever they wandered (China, Israel, Scotland, Bermuda), and even living abroad in Switzerland for Don’s work. The two enjoyed road trips, cruises, and hiking adventures with dear friends. Gloria brought laughter, music, curiosity, and a sense of adventure wherever she went, and her loss is deeply felt by those who knew her.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Donald Eugene Treash and her sister Diane Rotstein.

Survivors include her three devoted children Reverend Dr. Stephen Treash and his wife Jennifer, Robert Treash, and Dr. Laura (Treash) Minor and her husband James, and four cherished grandchildren Abigail Chau and her wife Hong, Joseph Minor, Caileigh Treash, and Parker Treash and his wife Hunter.

Friends and family are invited to attend her memorial service on Saturday, February 11, 2023, 11:00 a.m. at Black Rock Church, 3685 Black Rock Turnpike, Fairfield, CT.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Global Missions Program of Black Rock Church.
