Chanel boutique to come to Westport’s Main Street
WESTPORT — Main Street is about to get more luxe.
A Chanel boutique is opening at 58 Main Street, the previous location of the Peloton store.
“Chanel will be renovating the entire space with exception to the mechanical room and the existing restroom in the rear of the store,” Chris Engelmann, from architectural firm CallisonRTKL, said at the recent joint Historic District Commission and Architectural Review Board meeting.
The building is owned by Benjamin Birnbaum of Newmark and is being leased by Chanel, officials said at the meeting.
Birnbaum, Engelmann and Chanel did not respond to requests for comment.
Founded in 1910 by Coco Chanel in Paris, Chanel focuses in ready-to-wear outfits, accessories, fragrance and beauty.
A timeline for the project has not yet been confirmed, but façade modifications and signage were recently approved at the meeting.
Based on renderings from architect CallisonRTKL, the Chanel store appears to be a fragrance and beauty boutique.
The new signage is within planning and zoning allowances, hosting no more than three signs on the front of the store, within appropriate sizes, Engelmann said.
Chanel will use metal exteriors, rather than the wood exterior currently on the building, Engelmann said.
Plans say the work on the building will include new partitions, ceiling and floors, retail fixtures, lighting and interior finishes.
The outside of the store will be modified to reflect Chanel branding, changing from its current all black to black and white.
Inside, the sales area will include what appears to be a makeup counter with chairs and mirrors and places to test and select products. There will also be a lounge area towards the check out counter, according to plans.
The Chanel website does not list any current Connecticut boutique locations.
