Maine man charged with sex assault
FAIRFIELD — A Maine man was charged Friday with sexual assault for an incident that happened in Connecticut early last year, state police said.
Chad J. Harris, 41, of Sanford, Maine, was charged with second-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a child.
In December 2017, state police at Troop G in Bridgeport got a call from Stratford police about a sexual assault allegation that was reported by the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office in Maine.
Initially, investigators thought the assault might have happened in Stratford, but soon found out it was Fairfield.
State police said that on Sept. 15, 2017, a 14-year-old female victim told investigators in Maine that she had been inappropriately touched by Harris while at a Connecticut rest stop in February of that year.
The Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office was already investigating Harris for previous allegations made by the victim, state police said.
“It was determined that the sexual assault occurred at the (Interstate) 95 southbound, Fairfield Service Plaza,” on Feb. 19, 2017, state police said.
On Aug. 10, state police were granted an arrest warrant charging Harris in the incident.
On Friday, a week after getting the warrant, police learned that Harris was on board an Amtrak train headed to Maine from Pennsylvania. Amtrak police helped state police’s Mass Transit Security Team take Harris into custody around 5 a.m. at the New Haven train station.
Harris was transported to Troop G without incident. He was held on a $150,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court Friday.
