Crashed car with stolen mail leads to arrest of Bridgeport woman
WESTPORT — A Bridgeport woman was arrested early Monday morning after crashing her car and fleeing police.
In the rear of the disabled and abandoned car, police found a large amount of mail stolen from multiple Westport addresses.
According to Lt. Jillian Cabana, the incident began about 1:30 a.m. Monday when an officer on patrol saw a vehicle traveling westbound on Post Road East without a rear marker light and no rear license plate.
He tried to follow the vehicle for a short distance but it eluded him and sped off, Cabana said.
The vehicle struck the flower bed median at the intersection of Long Lots Road and Morningside Drive North, causing heavy property damage. Officers found the vehicle behind a building on Morningside Drive North disabled and still warm to the touch.
In the back seat, police found a vehicle registration plate belonging to Daisha Haynes, 20, of Bridgeport — and a large amount of mail from multiple Westport addresses, Cabana said in a release.
Shortly after police found the disabled vehicle, another officer saw what was described as a suspicious vehicle with four occupants traveling in the area.
He followed the vehicle and detected an odor of marijuana coming from the car. He stopped the car in the area of Greens Farms and Wake Robin roads.
Officers observed one male and one female passenger with grass stains and dirt on their clothing. The driver of the vehicle apparently had picked up the two in front of Shake Shack on Post Road East, police said.
The female passenger was identified as Haynes and the driver of the crashed motor vehicle.
The male was identified as Jovan Boyd, 27, of Bridgeport, and a passenger of the crashed motor vehicle.
Haynes was also found to be in possession of multiple credit cards belonging to other people, Cabana said.
Boyd was charged with interfering with an officer. He was released after posting $1,500 bond and was transported to Norwalk Court for arraignment.
Haynes was charged with evading responsibility, sixth-degree larceny, interfering with an officer, conspiracy to commit larceny and credit card theft.
She was released after posting $1,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on Oct. 15
