BRIDGEPORT — A local man was arrested after police said he seriously injured a bicyclist while fleeing a robbery.

David Meyers, 20, of Cottage Street in Bridgeport, was charged Friday with first-degree robbery, first-degree assault, first-degree larceny, evading responsibility and operating without a license.

He was held in lieu of $400,000 bond.

Police said shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday, a local man was riding his bicycle at the intersection of Railroad and Hancock avenues when he was struck by a speeding sport utility vehicle that then fled.

The bicyclist was taken to Bridgeport Hospital in serious condition with multiple injuries.

A short time later, police said, an officer was patrolling the University of Bridgeport campus when he spotted an SUV matching the description of the one involved in the earlier crash, smashed against a tree.

When the officer approached

the driver, later identified as Meyers, police said Meyers blurted, “I didn’t mean to hit the guy. Is he going to be OK?”

Police said the SUV, which had earlier been stolen in Norwalk, had the imprint of the bicyclist on its hood, as well as fragments of the victim’s skin and hair.

Police said the SUV was later identified as the getaway vehicle in the robbery of a UB student.

Police said the student told them he was getting out of his car at the campus when he was approached by two men wearing ski masks. The men punched the student in the face and took his cell phone before fleeing in the SUV, police said.
