Cop charged in DUI crash resigns
BRIDGEPORT — A veteran Bridgeport cop awaiting trial in connection with a drunkendriving crash in 2017 has resigned from the Police Department.
John Carrano, a cop since April 2011 and a former member of the department’s SWAT team, submitted his resignation late last week.
His lawyer, James Ruane, confirmed his client resigned but declined comment.
Carrano is charged with seconddegree assault with a motor vehicle and driving under the influence.
The case was transferred to state Superior Court in Milford for prosecution. It is scheduled to be in court
Nov. 4.
Police said Carrano had a blood/alcohol level of 0.25 — more than three times the legal limit — when he drove the wrong way on Broadbridge Avenue in Stratford on Dec. 23, 2017, and ran headon into a vehicle driven by a 19yearold woman who is the granddaughter of former Bridgeport mayor Thomas Bucci.
The victim suffered a broken right wrist and fractures of her right ankle that required surgery, police said. Carrano suffered minor injuries.
She has since sued Carrano and Vazzy’s restaurant where he had been drinking before the crash. Carrano was attending a holiday party of city police officers at Vazzy’s.
Carrano had been on administrative duty and assigned to the department’s property room.
