NEW HAVEN — New Haven police are investigating after Molotov cocktails were thrown at police substations in the Newhallville and Hill neighborhoods early Monday.

Police Chief Otoniel Reyes said that someone tossed a Molotov cocktail into the police substation in the Hill at 1 a.m. and did the same thing around 2 a.m. at the Newhallville substation on Winchester Avenue.

“Someone tried to burn down two community buildings. So what I would say to the community, is that we will not allow these acts to come between the work that we intend to do with our community,” Reyes said.

The chief said they are working with the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Forces to identify the culprit and will hold them responsible.

“We realize that this does not represent the sentiment of the community,” Reyes said

Capt. Anthony Duff said the attempted arson that occurred shortly after 2 a.m. caused minor cosmetic damage at the substation at 596 Winchester Ave.

The apparent explosion left char marks on the brick outside the entrance. MEMORIAMS
