-

March 20, 1929 - February 7, 2021

Mary Elizabeth Day Stutz, 91, died peacefully on February 7, 2021. She was born in Topeka, Kansas, to Harriet Lanning Day and the Very Reverend John Warren Day, Dean of Grace Episcopal Cathedral, Topeka.

A long time resident of Trumbull, CT., she is survived by her beloved husband of 72 years, Richard Griffin Stutz, and three children: Robert E. (Mary Jane Jennings), James R. (Rosemary Gombar), and Mary Elizabeth. She was predeceased by her son, Thomas Richard (Jane LeBeau). Mary was the proud grandmother of Sarah, Jennifer, John, Valentine, Anita, Eric and Victoria, and greatgrandmother to Wynter Rose. After building her house in Trumbull with her husband, Mary earned her teaching degree while raising her family. She taught at Fairfield Country Day School for twenty years, where she is still fondly remembered for her enthusiasm, her sense of humor, and her dazzling smile. Richard, an aerospace engineer, and Mary traveled the world extensively, and her fine photography documents their travels.

Her passions were many, and included her extended family, New York City, tag sales, gleefully avoiding housework, hosting joyous, unruly parties for friends and relatives, Glenn Miller, minarets, church bells, and a long procession of amiable pets. Her family extends their appreciation to her wonderful caregivers, Alla Barabadze and Marina KevlishiliCruz, who supported Mary through a long illness with love and unfailing good cheer.

A private family service is planned for this summer. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions to: Fairfield Country Day School, 2970 Bronson Road, Fairfield, CT 06824; or Grace Episcopal Cathedral, 701 SW 8th Avenue, Topeka, Kansas 66603.
