Police: Fight at Bunnell prompts brief lockdown
STRATFORD — Two students are in police custody Wednesday after a fight involving about 10 students broke out at Bunnell High School, according to authorities.
Police Captain Frank Eannotti said the fight happened at about 7:30 a.m. He said faculty and staff intervened in a fight involving about 10 students to try to break it up. Several police officers and the school resource officer responded and took control of the scene, he said.
The school was briefly put into lockdown as a precaution, Eannotti said.
He said two students — juveniles — are in custody. The investigation is ongoing.
The school district superintendent, Uyi Osunde, said at least two students were involved in an initial fight that grew into a larger, second fight.
“We had some students who got into an altercation,” Osunde said. “That altercation sprung into a second altercation involving at least one of the students from the original altercation. And in the conversation I had with our school leaders, I think they made the right call and (had) an abundance of caution to initiate a lockdown, so they could contain the situation and respond accordingly.”
He said school was able to resume following the incident Wednesday morning. Osunde said police and school officials met with the families of those involved.
The superintendent said he didn’t have details on whether either of the students taken into custody were arrested or charged. He said he plans to meet with the administration at the school later Wednesday to get more information.
