GIRLS VOLLEYBALL HIGHLIGHTS
TOP PERFORMERS
Maggie Carley, Trumbull: The junior setter had 62 assists in back-to-back 3-0 victories over town rival St. Joseph last Wednesday, and New Canaan on Saturday. She also had 10 aces in the two games, and made three blocks against New Canaan. The Eagles have won six straight.
Mya Dizenzo, Amity: The junior led the Spartans with 24 digs and five aces, while also putting down six kills, during a fiveset victory over North Haven on Friday.
Grace Downing, Cheshire: Downing had 15 assists and five aces to help the Rams top Amity 3-1 in a key SCC match on Tuesday.
Eva Dudley, Platt: The sophomore did a bit of everything with 18 kills, seven aces, nine digs and four assists during the Panthers’ five-set victory over New Britain last Wednesday.
Leilani Gillespie, Darien: Gillespie had 15 kills, three aces, three blocks and four digs in a 3-0 shutout of Ridgefield on Friday.
Kallie Guerraz, Conard: Guerraz, a senior, had 20 digs, 12 kills and four aces in Conard’s 3-2 win over Bristol Eastern last Wednesday.
Jayme Iodice, Stratford: Iodice racked up 30 digs during a 3-2 decision over Immaculate on Friday.
Christina Logan, Hamden: Logan, a senior right-side hitter, racked up 20 kills in a five-set victory over Laurelton Hall on Friday. She added 14 kills and 15 digs in a 3-2 loss to Mercy on Monday.
Bailey McDermott, Amity: The senior setter racked up 37 assists and 11 digs in a 3-2 win over North Haven on Friday.
Salmi Miller, Valley Regional: The senior had 20 digs, five kills and three aces during Valley regional’s 3-2 victory over Haddam-Killingworth on Friday. The Warriors rallied from two sets down to win, handing Haddam-Killingworth just its second loss of the season.
Avery Mola, Cheshire: Mola led the Rams with 12 kills while adding four aces and three digs during a four-set win over Amity on Tuesday.
Aubrey Moore, Darien: The sophomore setter collected 33 assists, 11 digs, three kills, and three aces in the Wave’s 3-0 win over Ridgefield on Friday.
Rita Sefransky, Fitch: The senior setter had 45 assists during a 3-2 loss to Ledyard on Monday.
Ava Steigbigel, Foran: The senior hitter led the Lions with 14 kills, and added six aces to the mix during a five-set victory over West Haven last Thursday.
Jessica Timothy, Haddam-Killingworth: Timothy, a senior outside hitter, had 24 kills during a five-set loss to Valley Regional on Friday.
Haley Weiner, Southington: Weiner, a junior, dished out 68 assists in two matches as the Blue Knights defeated Bristol Central in four sets last Wednesday, and Bristol Eastern in five sets on Friday.
Brooke Valentino, Bristol Central: The senior hitter had a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs to go along with two blocks during a 3-0 shutout against NFA on Saturday.
Hannah Webber, Bristol Eastern: The senior hitter amassed 78 kills in three matches during the past week. She had 29 kills and 28 digs against Conard last Wednesday and 28 kills against Southington on Friday, but the Lancers lost both matches in five sets. On Monday, Webber had 21 kills in a 3-0 win over Bristol Central.
GAMES TO WATCH
Darien at Wilton, Thursday, 5:30 p.m.: Darien has lost just once this season, a four-setter against No. 1 Greenwich, while Wilton is battling for position in the FCIAC playoffs. There’s a chance these two teams could see each other again in the conference quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Greenwich at St. Joseph, Thursday, 5:30 p.m.: Greenwich is zeroing in on an unbeaten regular season and the FCIAC’s top seed, while St. Joseph needs to finish strong to secure a home match in the first round of the conference tournament.
Naugatuck at Pomperaug, Thursday, 6:15 p.m.: The NVL visits the SWC for a battle between two 16-2 squads. It’s the second meeting of the season between teams, with Pomperaug taking the first match 3-1 back on Sept. 20.
St. Joseph at Wilton, Friday: 5:30 p.m.: A second tough match up in as many days for both the Cadets and Warriors. Both teams stumbled with consecutive losses last week before bouncing back with wins.
Amity at East Lyme, Friday, 5:30 p.m.: An SCC-ECC clash. Amity is 16-2 and both losses have come at the hands of unbeaten Cheshire, while East Lyme has won eight straight, dropping just one set during that run.
Fitch at Haddam-Killingworth, Friday, 5:30 p.m.: Another conference crossover to close out the regular season. Fitch is an ECC contender at 12-4, while Haddam-Killingworth leads the Shoreline and is 15-2 overall.
Conference tournaments: Believe it or not, it’s the end of the regular season and league playoffs will be getting underway during the next several days. The SCC will kick things off with first-round matches on Saturday — No. 1 Cheshire and No. 2 Amity have byes — and many of the other conference tournaments begin early next week.
