Teen remains incompetent for trial in 2020 Westport stabbing
The Guilford teen accused of stabbing a Greenwich woman outside a Westport salon last year will remain at a mental health facility and still not competent to stand trial, the prosecutor said Tuesday.
Ellis Tibere, 19, faces charges attempted murder, first-degree assault and possession of a deadly weapon. He remains at the Whiting Forensic Hospital in Middletown, where medical professionals continue to indicate he is not competent to stand trial.
During a brief remote hearing Tuesday, Senior Assistant State's Attorney Maureen Ornousky said Whiting provided a report on Monday, indicating Tibere remains incompetent to stand trial, but said medical professionals believe his competency can be restored. Tibere will remain at the facility for the time being.
Ornousky defense attorney John Gulash could not attend Tuesday’s hearing and requested a continuance in the case.
Gulash, according to Ornousky, was unable to attend the proceedings because he was scheduled to be in court at the same time on another matter where he was representing a witness in a murder case.
Since Gulash did not request a specific date for the continuance, Judge Kevin Randolph set a new court date of Dec. 2.
Tibere’s charges stemmed from an attack on Jan. 6, 2020, in the parking lot of a Post Road East plaza. His arrest affidavit indicated that he waited in the parking lot for hours and then attacked the random woman. Wearing a black mask, Tibere walked up to a Greenwich woman in her car, opened the door and stabbed her, according to the affidavit.
Tibere has also been charged with violating the conditions of release and first-degree criminal mischief after he allegedly removed his GPS monitor and left his family’s Guilford property where he had been on house arrest after posting a $1 million bond in May 2020.
