Woman apprehended after shooting leads to standoff in Bridgeport
BRIDGEPORT — A woman was apprehended after a reported shooting and standoff in the city’s East Side Thursday morning, according to police.
The city’s emergency communications center received calls for shots fired in the 600 block of William Street around 10:30 a.m., Scott Appleby, Bridgeport’s director of emergency management, said in a statement,
Police Capt. Kevin Gilleran said early information indicated a woman shot a gun from the third floor window of a multifamily home.
The city police SWAT team was called in to assist. A photo of the scene shared on social media showed police in an armored vehicle outside a home. Once officers arrived, they evacuated citizens living in the area, Gilleran said.
Crisis negotiators started to talk to the woman, later identified as 21-yearold Nilah Bowie, and determined there were still people inside the home, Gilleran said in a press release Thursday evening.
Officers went into the home’s first floor and quickly found three, uninjured people. Within a few minutes of going inside, officers placed Bowie, who was hiding in the basement, in custody, according to Gilleran.
An ambulance took
Bowie to an area hospital for treatment of superficial lacerations before police arrived. Medics checked the well-being of the firstfloor tenants, Gilleran said.
After being treated, Bowie was taken to the Bridgeport Police Department and charged with risk of injury to a minor, disorderly conduct, firstdegree reckless endangerment and interfering with a police officer. Her bond was set at $100,000 and she is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, according to Gilleran.
Appleby previously said that the incident was initially believed to be between two parties, and a man fled the area while a woman barricaded herself inside.
