MONROE— After a year of waiting, Newtown football has gotten revenge against Masuk after losing last year’s cost it the SWC championship.

Newtown dominated Masuk 46-12 to reclaim the SWC title, improving to 9-1 and most likely earning a first-round home game in the Class LL state tournament.

“This feels great, we knew we would come out and have a good game but I wasn’t expecting 46-12,” Newtown quarterback Dylan Magazu said. “I am happy with the way we played offensively, and then defensively we played very well as well.”

Magazu led the offense with three rushing touchdowns, including a 52 yarder on the first offensive snap of the game, as well as a 36-yard receiving touchdown and a fumble recovery.

“Magazu is a versatile athlete, and he is playing defense for us as well,” Newtown coach Bob Pattison said. “We move him around and he can do some different things that benefit us. We are a different team when we are able to move him around, and we will continue to mix and match.”

After Magazu’s first two touchdowns, Mausk responded with two second-quarter passing touchdowns from quarterback Dylan Jackson to Rob Klein for a 13-12 Newtown lead at halftime.

The Nighthawks, No. 10 in the GameTimeCT Top 10 poll, would run away with it in the second half behind six turnovers —

four fumble recoveries and two interceptions by Andrew Swierbut, one of which was a pick six.

“Swierbut was due, he had an uncharacteristic dropped punt in the first half,” Pattison said. “But that is the kind of player he is, he shakes it off and makes plays. He is such a versatile weapon.”

The Newtown defense held Masuk

scoreless in the second half while the offense racked up 33 points.

“The defense did a great job getting us the ball,” Pattison said. “Our kids came to play and we executed. When you win the turnover battle, most of the time you win the game.”

With the win, Newtown will now host a first round game in the Class LL tournament as SWC champions.

“It is great, with the SWC it is important,” Pattison said. “The SWC as a whole has a lot of good football teams with Masuk, Barlow, New Milford and New Fairfield as good teams and the SWC will be well represented at the state level.”

Masuk (7-3) will look to rebound in the Class MM tournament next week.

“They took us to the wood shed, this was a stronger team than us and we can’t turn the ball over that much,” Masuk coach Steve Christie said. “All the credit to Newtown and coach Pattison and his staff. The second half was just a nightmare.”

“We have to flush this one, it will probably take 24 hours but everyone will go home with their families,” Christie said. “I have seen it many teams that teams lose their rivalry game and go out and win a championship.”

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Newtown senior quarterback Dylan Magazu scored four touchdowns, three rushing and one receiving with a fumble recovery to lead his team to the SWC title.
