Cottage style is all about being elegant and yet homey. One way to get the look

is through the combination of rustic and refined elements. This bathroom, designed by Kelley McRorie of KS McRorie

Interior Design, has an ideal mixture of both. Here are the individual items that make the bathroom work so well.

Rustic

• VANITY. This vanity doesn’t have any frills—it’s basic and functional. Every room should have a piece like this, which will serve a practical purpose, but also not get in the way of the flashier pieces. The wood on the vanity has a nice stained patina, which sets the rustic tone for the room.

• MIRROR. Mirrors can make or break your bathroom, and this one catches the eye and is one of the main visual draws. The patina on the metal finish makes it feel rustic, as does the fact that it rests against the vanity top instead of hanging freely on the wall.

• FAUCET. The faucet has clean lines, and if it had a chrome finish, it would make the bathroom feel more polished. But with its oil-rubbed bronze finish, it fits more with the rustic aspect of the room. Notice that it doesn’t have the same finish as the metal on the mirror or wall sconces, which adds to the perfectly imperfect vibe.

Refined

• SHIPLAP. Wood paneling is such a classic feature for cottages, and shiplap is at the top of the list. The shiplap in this bathroom has clean lines and elegant white paint, which elevates the feel of the bathroom, bringing interest to the walls without distracting from the main features on and around the vanity.

• WALL SCONCES. These sconces are the refined stars of this bathroom. With their tempered bronze background and naked bulb, they’re both unusual and eye-catching.

• CERAMIC SINK. Like the vanity, the sink itself is simple, but its modern design and above-counter style help balance out the otherwise-rustic vanity.
