Buy a handmade rug
Handmade vintage Turkish rugs made attainable.
For most rooms, the rug is the piece that adds the final touch of warmth.
But good rugs, let alone good vintage rugs, have a reputation for being hard to come by. That’s what inspired Amber and Ben Hyman and Kurt Korkmaz and Joyce Kong to start their company, Revival Rugs. Frustrated by unreasonable prices, poor quality or lack of seller transparency, the two couples based in Oakland, California, and Istanbul, Turkey, started the company because they “felt that a one-of-a-kind rug shouldn’t cost a month’s rent.”
A GLOBAL TRIP
Kurt and Joyce (the couple living in Istanbul) had traveled to remote cities in Turkey and built a network of artists who could supply beautiful, one-of-a-kind vintage rugs. When Amber and Ben Hyman (living in California) visited their friends in Turkey, Kurt asked them if they wanted to be partners in supplying U.S. businesses with rugs. But Ben thought they could have a greater impact by selling directly to the consumer.
“We handpick a carefully curated selection of rugs and bring them to your door, minus the markup,” says Ben. And with operations in both the U.S. and Turkey, the couples visit their rug suppliers on a monthly basis to make sure the rugs meet quality specifications and that artisans are being treated fairly.
THE RUGS
Revival Rugs offers vintage rugs and products of various types: vintage original, overdyed, distressed, antique washed, kilims, and kilim cushions. “All of our rugs are handpicked from villages in Anatolia where we inspect their quality and durability. “says Ben. After this initial assessment, the rugs are moved to a cleaning and processing facility, where they are tumbled, sheared (except kilims), washed, categorized/processed, dried and mended.
