IN SEASON
These cottage-friendly towns have the picturesque scenery—and beautiful stays—to make your autumn travel endlessly inspiring.
KENNEBUNKPORT, MAINE
Sure, this coastal town is a classic summer destination, but the Maine coast in the fall has a whole other special kind of energy. The crisp fall weather tinged with the salt air of Kennebunkport’s coast is a lovely backdrop for antiquing, water sports and just touring the roads lined with glorious fall foliage.
Where to stay: It’s hard to throw a lobster claw in this town without hitting a charming historic inn. A few standout favorites: White Barn Inn or Main Stay Inn & Cottages. Or take your luxury up a notch with a stay at the darling interiors of the Tides Beach Club.
Where to eat: The lobster rolls of Alisson’s Restaurant have been a local institution since 1972. The Bandaloop, a barn-turned-restaurant, is an elegant option, which specializes in local organic and seasonal fare.
What to do: Stroll on Parson’s Way for a picturesque walk to visit Saint Ann’s historic stone church, or jump on the famed Intown Trolley for a guided tour of the best parts of town.
NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA
Why is fall a great time to visit this famed wine country? Because as the last of the summer grapes come in, the landscape bursts with vibrant orange and red, and the air fills with the aroma of aging grapes, blueberries and wine-making. Enjoy fewer crowds and special events that only happen in the fall, such as the Napa Valley Film Festival and the PGA’s Safeway Open.
Where to stay: Auberge du Soleil is Napa resort life Provence style. Or for a more boutique experience, Maison Fleurie in Yountville packs lots of French country charm into a petite 13-room estate.
Where to eat: French Laundry, Bouchon Bistro… the list of worldrenowned restaurants in the area is long. But if you are looking for something a little more grab-and-go, try Oxbow Public Market.
What to do: Two words: wine tasting.
