Crisp whites, sandy neutrals and nautical finds add seafaring charm to a Virginia coastal cottage
What comes to mind when you think of a cottage by the water?
Airy spaces, ocean breezes, bare feet and sandals. Let’s turn that up a notch to an elegant, nautical-style cottage in Stafford, Virginia, that’s both luxurious and comfortable. The creative force behind this spruce space is wife, mother and Instagram/blogger, Becca Bertotti of Adventures in Decorating. Once intimidated by anything DIY, Becca now welcomes the opportunity to use her creative skills to tackle any project. She describes her home as having a modern farmhouse feel with seaside-inspired elements that reflect colors from the ocean.
DIY Darling
Becca is addicted to paint, especially chalk paint, and has painted walls, woodwork and several pieces of furniture in her home. The buffet (once a walnut stain) was made anew with Rust-Oleum Chalked Paint in Aged Gray (rustoleum.com). A pair of slipcovered parson chairs (ikea.com), the wood cross-back chairs (wayfair.com) and a linear pendant light (wayfair.com) complement the vintage table, while classic blue and white accessories anchor the look. The large antique mirror opens the space up and helps illuminate the room with natural light.
Serene Space
“The inspiration for the sitting room is my love for the beach,” says Becca. “I tried to create a calm and coastal space that makes you feel as though the ocean is right outside the window.”
Easy Entry
In the foyer, Becca created a welcome-home feel that’s simple, light and airy. A natural wood bench, matching floor lamps, decorative hooks and whimsical artwork make the space functional and stylish.
