Set a Gorgeous Mid-Winter Table
A designer shows us how to set a warm and cozy table for friends.
“Flowers are what makes any space more elegant and magical, so they are always my
main focus.”
Whether it’s a gathering of a few close friends or sisters,
curating a beautiful tablescape can be a special gift you give to the gal pals in your life.
We asked Alyssa Long, a Utah-based floral enthusiast and designer, to give us her tips on creating a comfortable and memorable table.
CB: What are the key pieces for this intimate table?
Alyssa: Since the winters get so long and cold here in Utah, I wanted to warm the space up with rich colors, fun textures and cozy candlelight. I added oodles of pillows for comfortable bench seating and several votive candles near each place-setting for an extra toasty glow. Flowers are what makes any space more elegant and magical, so they are always my main focus. I used less traditional winter colors for this gathering, and I was delighted that it evoked surprised “oohs” and “ahhs” from my guests. The colors I chose speak warmth and comfort to me.
CB: What flowers did you use in this gorgeous arrangement?
Alyssa: For this arrangement, I gathered garden Juliet roses, peach ranunculus, white lisianthus, white scabiosa, caramel roses and garden spray roses, along with some artificial bunny tail and dried white fern. I used a vessel from Afloral.com (I recommend them for faux flowers if you are not able to find fresh flowers in your area year-round). I think it is so fun and unique to create and design your own floral centerpiece! If you feel uncomfortable about designing, I say pick up some snippers and just go for it! You'll be surprised how much you enjoy working with flowers and creating something beautiful of your own.
CB: What did you start with as the base of your tablescape?
Alyssa: Once I had my pillows in place, I hung this amazing tassel mobile above the table to add even more texture and interest. Then I used a simple cheesecloth runner across the table, allowing it to loosely drape onto the floor. Next, I added plates from Magnolia Home and my favorite two-toned flatware. I twisted the napkins into a loose knot and laid them atop the plates along with a fresh cut fig.
CB: What are some of your go-to brunch treats?
Alyssa: For this gathering of girlfriends, I started off with freshly baked croissants with a drizzle of icing and sparkling juices before I served the rest of the meal. Because I have a smaller table, I like to set up a nearby station with additional candles, food, my beloved copper pitcher and my cutting board on the wall above.
