(Get Your GREEN ON

-

Choosing the perfect palette for your home can involve lots of time and trips to the local home and garden store. With its earthy vibe and relaxed feel, green is a great color indoors and out. Go with a fresh, nature-inspired look for your kitchen cabinets, enhance your living room with a statement wall or give one of your bedrooms a refresh. Designer Valerie Helgeson offers her paint selections for your consideration in your next palette update.

1. Oakmoss: “As the name suggests this is a true mossy-green color; it has some yellow undertones which make the paint appear the warmest out of all of the greens.”

2. Backwoods: “This is a true forest green with neutral undertones, meaning it doesn’t pull too warm or too cool when compared with other materials.”

3. Peale Green: “A brighter and more vibrant green compared to the others and has some blue undertones while still remaining pretty neutral.”

4. Caldwell Green: “This contains the most blue undertones out of all the selected greens and almost has a grayish tint to it.”

PRESERVING HISTORY

One of the most exciting aspects of older homes is the history they hold, whether in their architecture, quirky features or quality materials. While the Hannas wanted to update their home to meet their current needs, keeping these pieces of the past alive was an important part of the kitchen remodel. “Being true to the home’s Craftsman style architecture was important to us, and making the home feel true to it and the period in which it was built was a big focus,” Valerie says. To pay homage to the cottage’s history, Valerie’s kitchen redesign includes the window above the sink as well as the brick vent stack—original features of the home. In addition, she made sure that all the new materials would reflect a timeless design style, as well meet the Hannas’ functional needs. White quartz countertops, simple tile backsplash, warm wood accents and a charming Dutch door seamlessly update the space without feeling too modern. “At the end of the day, they have to love their space, and their happiness means everything to me,”Valerie says.
