• Hip roof: A roof that has slopes on four sides of equal lengths. The slopes con­verge at the top of the home to form a ridge.

• Hip and val­ley: A sep­a­rate sec­tion of roof that does not line up with the top ridge of the main hip roof. The place where the two rooflines con­verge is called the val­ley.

• Clap­board: Wood sid­ing that has hor­i­zon­tal over­lap­ping boards that cre­ate an evenly spaced line pat­tern.

• Shin­gle roof: A roof­ing ma­te­rial made of in­di­vid­ual wood pieces that over­lap to cre­ate a square grid pat­tern.
