SO­LU­TION

Var­ie­gated sweet flag (Acorus cala­mus ‘Var­ie­ga­tus’) has tall striped fo­liage and thrives in wet soils (near right).

• Lady fern (Athyrium filix-fem­ina) hap­pily self-sows along the moist edge of the pond (fore­ground).

• Shiny-leaved skunk cab­bage (Lysi­chi­ton × hort­en­sis), a ster­ile hy­brid of the Asian and Amer­i­can species, grows in a well-be­haved clump and fea­tures wide 3-foot long spathes in spring (far left).
