‘DAVID’ GAR­DEN PHLOX

(Phlox pan­ic­u­lata ‘David’) This pure white phlox’s fra­grance in­ten­si­fies in the even­ing. The boun­teous clus­ters of blooms reach 40 inches. Plant them in the back third of the bor­der. Zones 3–8

‘HAAS’ HALO’ HY­DRANGEA

(Hy­drangea ar­borescens ‘Haas’ Halo’) A vari­a­tion of the na­tive smooth hy­drangea, ‘Haas’ Halo’ pro­duces 14-inch lace­cap blooms beloved by bees. Also con­sider In­cred­iball and ‘Annabelle’ hy­drangeas. Zones 3–9

GAYFEATHER

(Li­a­tris spi­cata) Gayfeather is a North Amer­i­can na­tive that brings a ver­ti­cal ac­cent to a bor­der and draws plenty of but­ter­flies. Zones 3–8

‘ICE BAL­LET’ MILKWEED

(As­cle­pias in­car­nata ‘Ice Bal­let’) Milkweed pro­vides es­sen­tial nour­ish­ment for monarch but­ter­flies through all stages of their lives—lar­vae through adult. Zones 3–9

SHASTA DAISY

(Leu­can­the­mum x su­per­bum) But­ter­flies love th­ese nos­tal­gic white daisies with cheery yel­low cen­ters. Try Daisy May for the front of a bor­der or ‘Becky’ for the back. Em­brace all shades of white, in­clud­ing blooms with gold cen­ters. Zones 5–9

‘WHITE SWAN’ CONEFLOWER

(Echi­nacea pur­purea ‘White Swan’) ‘White Swan’ coneflower de­liv­ers size and vigor as well as trea­sured seed heads for goldfinche­s. Zones 3–8

‘CASA BLANCA’ ORI­EN­TAL LILY

(Lil­ium ‘Casa Blanca’) Add ro­mance to the gar­den with th­ese stand­out lilies. Their large flow­ers give off a sweet fra­grance and are a fa­vorite for wed­dings. Zones 5–8

‘FIRE­FLY DI­A­MOND’ YARROW

(Achil­lea ‘Fire­fly Di­a­mond’) This yarrow stands out for its ivory color and sum­mer-long blooms that re­quire min­i­mal dead­head­ing. Zones 3–8

SIL­VER FO­LIAGE

Con­sider an­nual sil­ver-leaved plants with long-last­ing fo­liage in­clud­ing Senecio can­di­cans An­gel Wings, left; Di­chon­dra ar­gen­tea ‘Sil­ver Falls’; and aro­matic herbs such as Eu­ca­lyp­tus ‘Sil­ver Drop’.

RA­DI­ANT AN­NU­ALS

An­nual flow­ers fill in be­tween peren­nial blooms. Try Cos­mos bip­in­na­tus ‘Cup­cakes White’, left; An­gelo­nia ‘Archangel White’; flow­er­ing tobacco (Ni­co­tiana alata); and Cleome has­s­le­ri­ana ‘White Queen’.
