PROVENANCE: Scooped up at a holiday antiques show

WHAT IT IS: Located in eastern Germany, the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) region was established as a mining community as early as the 16th century. “The setting of this quaint, woodsy community inspired many of these miners to become artisans, carving objects out of the wood they found near the mines,” says appraiser Marsha Dixey. “Without a mark, I cannot say absolutely, but your handcrafted piece has the appearance of being a later ‘Erzgebirge’ Santa, likely dating from the 1950s or ’60s.”

WHAT IT’S WORTH: $200
