Decorating with Paint— on a Budget

Country Sampler Autumn Decorating SIP 2018 - - Inside -

Overcome any fears you might have about transforming garage-sale finds with a fresh coat of paint. These tips from Anne Nash will get you started:

NOTHING TO LOSE Start your first furniture-painting project with a free or bargain find. “That way,” Anne says, “if you mess up, it’s not the end of the world!”

GIVE IT A WASH Wipe down the piece to remove any grit or grime so the paint will adhere better.

GET CREATIVE Think like an artist. Don’t be afraid to mix paint colors until you find what you like. Anne mixes her paints in a plastic container with a lid, even combining leftover wall paint with chalky-finish paint as needed.

LAYER IT ON If you cover a piece with too many layers of paint, use a hand-held sanding block to remove some of it. If it’s still not right, try a palm sander to crackle it a bit.

ECONOMICS 101 You don’t need to buy a whole set of name-brand paints. Instead, Anne advising using up whatever you have on hand. “It’s a great way to transform something without spending a lot of money.”
