ENDEARING KITSCH RECAPTURES THE CASUAL, CAREFREE MOOD OF THE 1930s AND ’40s.
1. Run Wild
Forget trying to match or coordinate patterns or colors. Collect endearingly tacky kitsch—plastic hula girls, ceramic poodles, plaster garden gnomes—anything that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Let your heart be your guide.
2. Don’t Go Solo
Never buy a vintage lamp if it doesn’t have its original shade. It’s nearly impossible to find a match. If the original is in bad shape, just re-cover it.
3. Paint on a New Hue
Unify old gesso frames that don’t match by sponging them with paint in the color of your choice. It hides imperfections but lets the gold glimmer through.
4. Add Some Shine
Create attractive accents on moldings and furniture with high-gloss latex paint. It goes on like warm butterscotch and is pleasantly eyecatching.
