A unique fireplace is the perfect canvas for showcasing varied collections. Follow Rosie’s hints on how to present collections to their best effect.
Strive for symmetry. To create a balanced mantel vignette, like this one in the family room, begin with a central piece from which all else will flow. Rosie started with a weather-vane horse, placing a miniature house below it.
Be like-minded. Place items of similar size and shape on either side of the display. Here, a vertical checkerboard on the left pairs well with the large, colorful dye tin at right. Meet in the middle. Work toward the center to create a pleasing arrangement. Rosie brought in items including hogscraper candlesticks filled with battery-operated candles and smaller horses.
Cover your bases. Incorporate items between the mantel and hearth that will draw the eye upward. On the hearth below, stacks of multicolored firkins are matched by a large handmade house by the late craftsman Dean Johnson.
