DRIFTWOOD LOOKER
When Sylvia Cook of Sylvia Cook Inspirations was looking for a new table and chairs for her small eating area, she scored with the right-size round table and a set of four perfectly shaped chairs that she found at two different resale sites. She knew she wanted to redo the standard maple finish into something that had a weathered driftwood appearance.
After gaining inspiration online, she decided on a paint treatment that started with Minwax stain in Classic Grey, which she wiped off between two coats. Then she dry-brushed the table with a coat of white chalkyfinish paint (wiping again to let the grain show through), another lighter wash of watered-down white chalky-finish paint, and topped it with a white wax and a clear sealer. The chairs got a slightly different look with a beginning coat of white chalky-finish paint, then several layers of a self-made mix of Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Eulalie’s Sky, Kitchen Scale and Layla’s Mint with a little teal-colored wood stain thrown in, and finally all topped it with a clear rub-on wax. Sylvia did a light sanding on the pieces before painting and also some distressing before finalizing the topcoats. The results look like something straight from the seashore!
