DIY Coffee Bar

Amanda and her father converted a little-used closet into one of the family's favorite spaces. Here's how you can do the same:

-

1. Remove the door and shelving.

2. Bring in a qualified electrician to install outlets for a mini fridge, small appliances, and lighting.

3. Spackle over any holes and repaint.

4. Measure the depth of the closet, from the back wall to the outer edge of the doorframe and from side to side. These will be the approximate dimensions of your countertop. (You’ll undercut by 1/2" to 1" so the countertop can be slid in at an angle.)

5. Measure and cut your countertop material and install it using brackets. For hers, Amanda chose 3/4" plywood topped with lengths of laminate flooring, which proved to be both affordable and low maintenance.

6. For a classic farmhouse look, install shiplap along the sides and back wall of the space. You can also add special trim or architectural pieces. Amanda used reclaimed barnwood and a decorative metal arch.

7. Cut the old closet door in half, sand the top smooth, and paint. Install it at the bottom of the opening, under the countertop, to conceal a mini fridge or to hide additional shelving. Add a vintage-style latch to give it a barn-door look.

8. Install a cubby shelf with hooks to hold your favorite mugs and seasonal accents, and hang signs that speak to your favorite beverage. 9. Arrange your coffeemaker or kettle alongside containers of hot cocoa mix, marshmallows, candy and other drinkmaking accoutrements on the counter. Be sure to leave plenty of prep space.

10.Switch out your accessories with the seasons. For example, include a mini silver tree and glass canister of candy canes for Christmas or small pumpkins for fall.

Look for the “Coffee Bar” highlight on Amanda’s Instagram page to see it all come together.
