Here are five clever ideas that will motivate you to think outside the pot and cultivate cast-off goods into pretty planters.
Learn inventive ways to turn castoff goods into garden treasures.
1 All Cracked Up
Turn a broken pot into a multilevel succulent garden, with tiers created by shards of other shattered containers. Use pebbles and moss to fill in the gaps, and station a few miniature garden accessories here and there to lend a whimsical touch.
2 Special Delivery
Repurpose a rusty metal mailbox, post and all, as a perfectly packaged container garden filled with a mix of flowers and succulents. Open the hinged door to further expand its planting possibilities.
3 Catch of the Day
Reel in some charm by recasting an old wicker fishing creel as a container for trailing blooms. The long shoulder strap eases its transition to hanging flower basket.
4 Sweet Seat Filler
Re-seed a worn-out chair seat to give it a new lease on life. Paint the frame a vivid hue and loosely upholster it with landscape fabric by stapling the cloth around the seat, creating a pouch to hold potting soil and an assortment of annuals. Or, instead, seek out an old wash pan or a cooking pot that fits the seat space.
5 Soda Swap
Craft a living centerpiece from a soda box, making use of some of the compartments that once held bottles to cradle small pots of flowers or succulents. If desired, prop up some pots to make them level with the top of the box, and camouflage the edges of the pots with Spanish moss. Fill the other open compartments with unique stones or votive candles in small glass holders.
