COASTAL CHARM
Decorations gathered from the environment, including magnolia leaves, feathers, shells and apples, are all staples of traditional Colonial Christmas decorating. Give a plain evergreen wreath a lush makeover that recalls a New England holiday. Start by positioning red berries on the wreath, and then counter the rough evergreen texture with smooth magnolia leaves. Evenly distribute the berries and leaves around the wreath. Next, alternate apples and coastal fare, for example, scallop shells and sea stars, attaching the items with picks or wire. Insert pheasant feathers around the outside of the wreath for a wispy touch. Suspend the wreath on ribbon over a mirror and then create a coordinating garland to make a cohesive vignette.
