Nobody says two-piece cupboards, hutches or cabinets must stay together forever. Hang a top piece on the wall, perhaps with a table underneath. Use a bottom for a sideboard or linen chest. Or, for a one-of-a-kind masterpiece, stack an unrelated top and bottom. “Once they are painted and distressed, you never know,” says Rogna, who hung a plate rack above the bottom of a Hoosier cabinet in her sunroom.
“I just like things very homey, and I like old stuff around me.”
Opposite: The sunroom’s year-round pencil tree is decked out with golden sunflowers for fall. “It matches the scene outside the window,” Rogna explains. Her love of textiles is readily apparent as she deftly mingles plaid and checked patterns and pairs rugged drop-cloth slipcovers with a muted Oriental rug. Rogna hangs a bucket that’s overflowing with vibrant foliage from the top rung of a ladder. The bucket’s contents can be updated easily for every season.
Below: A happy sunroom corner soothes the transition between indoors and out with whimsical characters and bundles of garden botanicals. Wood and metal elements reminiscent of yesteryear cover the space from floor to ceiling accompanied by a retinue of pumpkins in varying sizes. Just for fun, a handmade doll catches a ride on the garland-strung swing. H
