Flannel Fix-Up

-

Take worn-out flannel shirts or fabric scraps from rags to riches by recycling them into a welcoming wreath for your front door. Sarah Ramberg of Sadie Seasongoods crafted this plaid Christmas decoration by upcycling flannel material and a straw wreath that she purchased from a thrift store. Sarah mixed four different patterns for her design. Follow her directions to create a wreath to match your favored style.

1.

Measure the thickness of the wreath and then cut out and iron strips of flannel fabric that are long enough to wrap around the wreath form. Leave about 1" of flannel overlap on the backside of the wreath. “Somewhat arbitrarily, I decided on a 31/2" width for each strip of flannel material,” Sarah notes. Sew a 1/4" hem on one long side of each fabric strip by hand or on a sewing machine.

2.

Wrap the first strip of flannel fabric around the wreath, pull it taut (but not stretched), and pin it in place. Then, apply a dot of hot glue to secure it and remove the pins. This will be the backside of the wreath.

3.

Continue this process with the remainder of the pieces, laying each consecutive strip over the raw edge of the previous one so only the hemmed edge is visible.

4.

Arrange Christmas greenery, pinecones and floral stems on the wreath and secure them in place with pins and hot glue.

5.

Pin or glue a loop of ribbon to the back of the wreath to serve as a hanger.
