1 Create a Paint Stain

To begin a makeover project, choose any water-based paint in a latex or acrylic formula to create your own paint stain. Thoroughly mix one part paint with two parts water; the paint mixture will have a very thin consistency like stain. This concoction will provide sheer coverage and will allow you to see the wood or metal of your piece through the paint. It will also enable you to build color density through multiple coats, giving you ultimate control over depth.
