A-DOOR-ABLE POTTING SHED

-

Ask and ye shall receive. Janelle showed Rich a photograph of a similar potting shed and said, “This is what I want for Mother’s Day.” He drew up plans and, with the help of son Tony, built it for Janelle from four recycled doors, although he’s quick to point out that new doors would also work. She now uses the petite structure for storage of off-season garden goods and as a focal point in her back garden. Handy with a hammer? Rich offers the following how-to.

1. Build a 33" x 33" base using treated wood. Try garden pavers as a foundation.

2. Construct a frame to accommodate the dimensions of your doors. The doors on this shed are 30" wide x 80" tall. Nail the frame to the base.

3. Attach four doors to the frame and base, mounting the front door on hinges so it can swing open. Consider installing shelves inside or doing without to accommodate tall garden tools. Janelle chose two upper shelves for decorating in summer, when she leaves the door open to highlight vignettes.

4. Tack on a simple peak roof made of thin boards, and protect it from the weather with corrugated galvanized metal cut to size.
