Lovely Layers

-

Janelle’s love of country decor prompts her to make the most of every space. The living room, for example, shows her affinity for overlaying objects. Learn how to adopt a robust look with her quick tricks.

SWEET REPEAT:

Group multiples together. Janelle especially likes trios—note the three birdhouses and three matching potted trees on the dry sink. “I think things look good in threes,” she remarks.

ROOM FOR ALL:

If your fireplace is faux or not in use, load the focal point with charm. Distress or paint the wood to coordinate with your favored hues, and set a salvaged window atop the mantel. Conceal the fireplace opening with a timeworn shutter, and lean a second shutter on the mantel to provide background

texture. Arrange a series of spindles, greens and birdhouses in front of the shutters.

SMOKE SCREEN:

Disguise hearth tiles that are either damaged or a mismatch for your aesthetic with a folded throw or rug.

BASKET BOUNTY:

Try tobacco baskets and other woven baskets as frames and pedestals. Tip a couple on their sides and wire on wreaths, or set one on the hearth as a base for a frosty winter grouping.

I am obsessed with pillows and throws because they add such a cozy feeling. The more fringe and tassels, the better.”
